Father’s Promise

Like a strike of lighting

bolting through my brain,

the change of life occurs,

not to be explained.

I see responsibility;

I am now to provide,

protect, parent, and encourage,

no matter doubts inside.

So my best is what I give;

my best is not nearly enough,

and working hard to live

seems like a tragic waste of time.

How her smile warms my heart;

her babbling inspires

countless feelings of joy and

hopes that spread like fires.

She deserves so much more

than I’ll ever potentially be,

but she’ll know not what she misses;

she’ll only know me.

Let the world with expectations

like stones upon me press,

for I’d gladly bear the burdens

to relieve her of life’s stress.

I wish I could be perfect,

functioning on no sleep,

feeding, caring, loving, teaching,

‘gainst her conforming like sheep.

All I can ever promise,

delivery assured,

is that in me she’ll find forever

she’s lovingly adored.

About The Lost Poet

I write because I find inspiration. It is my hope that through my writing some connections may be felt. Everything I write comes from my experiences with life, and with the people that I love. I try to remember to see myself in everyone, and everyone in myself.
